Laura Elser

Veterinary Technician

Laura Elser grew up drawing horses on the back of her homework assignments in Milford, NH. After she turned 8, she started taking western lessons at Mack Hill Riding Academy in Amherst, NH, where she quickly became a working student. She attended school at the University of Findlay in Ohio, double majoring in Western Equestrian Studies and Business Management. During her time there she was an active participant in the IHSA program, and then became the treasurer for the University’s Ranch Horse Team. To further her knowledge of training performance horses, she interned during the summer months for professional NRHA trainers in KY and AZ. She graduated in 2016 summa cum laude.

After graduation, she worked for NRCHA trainer Benny Guitron in Merced, CA, where she became interested in sport horse medicine. Moving back across the country, she started working as a vet tech for a sport horse practice based out of Brewster, NY; traveling to Wellington, FL during the winter months for the Winter Equestrian Festival. After four seasons in Florida, Laura traveled back to the West, to Shell, Wyoming, where she was a wrangler at a small dude ranch for 3 seasons. After those 3 memorable seasons, she returned to the East Coast, working for a different sport horse practice; this time splitting her years between Traverse City, MI and Wellington, FL. During her last 2 seasons in Wellington, she ran into a close friend who also worked at the dude ranch with her in Wyoming! Dinette Neuteboom, founder of HorseGrooms, asked Laura to be a contributor to her growing website. You can find Laura’s series of articles, titled Don’t Piss Off Your Vet, at HorseGrooms.com!

Laura moved to Colorado in August of 2024, having fallen in love with the state after driving through it for her cross-country trips. She loves exploring Rocky Mountain National Park, as well as the surrounding National Forests with her 8-year-old American Dingo, Tessa. When not outside, she’s editing her photos from a recent trip or curled up with a good book under a mountain of blankets.
